Nereus Pharmaceuticals Names Dr. Martin Rosenberg to Board of Directors

San Diego, California - February 4, 2002 - Nereus Pharmaceuticals Inc., a pioneer in drug discovery and development from marine microbial sources, today announced Dr. Martin Rosenberg has joined the board of directors. Rosenberg will serve as a resource and offer recommendations on issues impacting the direction of Nereus' drug discovery and development program.

"Dr. Rosenberg's broad expertise in microbiology, anti-infectives and drug discovery will be an extraordinarily valuable asset to Nereus," said Kobi Sethna, president and CEO of Nereus. "As our programs quickly progress towards validating our leads, his vast knowledge will aid us in ensuring the successful development of products derived from untapped novel resources."

Rosenberg recently retired from his position as senior vice president of anti-infectives and drug discovery at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he also served as senior vice president of worldwide biopharmaceutical research and development. There he led the anti-infectives franchise that placed the company in a leading position in that area of research and played a key role in developing a new quinolone antibiotic gemifloxacin (Factive) and the commercialized recombinant hepatitis B vaccine Engerix-B.

Previously, Rosenberg spent 10 years at the National Institutes of Health, advancing to section chief in the laboratory of biochemistry at the National Cancer Institute. He was formerly a principal investigator for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and was awarded a grant to study biothreat pathogen countermeasures. Rosenberg is currently vice president of research and development and a member of the board at Promega Corporation.

Rosenberg serves as a member of the Food and Drug Administration science board and has been a member of the executive council for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He also serves on the editorial boards of numerous international scientific journals.

Rosenberg has received several prestigious awards, including the Arthur S. Fleming Award for his achievements in the field of microbial gene regulation, the Panlab Award for his work in the areas of microbiology and biotechnology and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue University.

Rosenberg holds adjunct professorships in the department of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania and in the department of biochemistry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. He obtained his Ph.D. from Purdue University and received post-doctoral training at Yale University Medical School. Rosenberg has published more than 200 papers and is a named inventor on almost 50 issued patents.
